lyrics

There were so many ways to lead us out and cut our teeth,
And there was so little time to way this up and make ends meet,
And you were a long-distance runner and I could tell by your feet
that you had every step and change of rhythm worked out beat by beat.

But where water is water
and the river is now
you can see where it gets to
but can only guess how.
But if you sleep when I'm dreaming
then we'll never miss out.

So we hung out coats and hats and hopes for high tide to wash away
And we marched miles right out across the open ocean.
And we were long gone from this world to another far from here.
And what I never knew was just how distant we could get without a single tear.

To where water is water
and the river is now
we can see where it gets to
but can only guess how.
And if you sleep when I'm dreaming
then we'll never miss out.

So we laid every step and change of rhythm forward for all to see,
And someone somewhere high above our heads was laughing.
And if heaven has another word for dream

I'll never underestimate a single possibility
and even if we never get to where it is we're trying to be,
to see and feel and hear the things we want to feel and hear and see,
it's always going to be a part of what it is we're going to be.
